31 celebrates three years
31 returns to Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet’s 8th season, now celebrating three years of uplifting, inspiring, and empowering women! 31 is a workshop and show designed to celebrate women and will take place on Sept. 30, at the Greensboro Coliseum. 31 is made possible through the generous support of Lincoln Financial Foundation and an Anonymous Donor.
The production has two parts: a workshop for women and a show. The morning workshops start at 8:30 am and run until 3 pm. The day opens with the Little Red Jumpsuit Tour presented by Kimberly Roberts. She delivers a message to celebrate, encourage, and lift-up women on their journeys to wellness. Next, Angela Brown of Five Star Luxestyle will present a two part Vision Board Workshop to help women realize their dreams, set their goals, and find their purpose! Then, the women will have a Confidence Photoshoot with award-winning photographer, Maria Sollecito-Olsen. Finally, they will have an Empowering Dance Workshop with Princess Johnson.
They will learn a dance to “I’m Every Woman” by Whitney Houston and have the opportunity to dance on stage at the end of the show. April Schweitzer, Founder of Graceful Expressions Dance Education Center and Resident Choreographer of Royal Expressions, will do a wrap-up session with the ladies to close out the workshop portion before the show. All the workshop participants, their families, and the Greensboro Community are invited to attend the 31 show at 4 p.m. – a choreography collective of dance works that celebrate the strength, beauty and wisdom of women. This year will feature works by Alicia Graf Mack (former lead dancer at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater), Willie Hinton (former dancer at Philadanco), Tabia McKinzie, Amma Waddell, and Princess Johnson.
Coming back to the stage after a one-year hiatus is “Going Home” choreographed by Alicia Graf Mack in 2015 and “Though I Walk” choreographed by Tabia McKinzie in 2015. Princess Johnson will also perform the world premiere of “Pearls” choreographed by Willie Hinton. The roster of dancers this year includes Company Members: Marli Bennett, Jade Donnell, and Princess Johnson; Apprentices: Promyss Watley and LaStasia Davis; and Trainee: Chandra Cherry. This is Jade Donnell’s third year with the company. Marli Bennett was recently promoted to company member and this is her second year. The company welcomes Promyss Watley, LaStasia Davis, and Chandra Cherry to the stage for their first year. Chandra Cherry was the founding Board President of Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet 2010 – 2015.
