A ‘Special, Special’ event for the holidays at Geeksboro Coffeehouse Cinema

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, Acme Comics and Geeksboro Coffeehouse Cinema are joining forces to celebrate the Christmas season in merry, musical fashion with “The Very Merry Christmas Special, Special.”

This unique holiday event combines live entertainment with a specially-themed pop-culture video presentation featuring clips from various Christmas specials and holiday commercials from the 1980s and ‘90s, including Star Wars, Batman, South Park, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and many more, with the added attraction of live music provided by Crystal Bright of Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands.

This is the second such event at Geeksboro, and according to owner/creative director Joe Scott it will become an annual event. “When we hosted the event last year, it was a beta test to see if such a weird idea would even work,” he said. “People loved it, so we thought we would up the ante by adding a charitable component and incorporating our friends and allies at Acme Comics.”

In this season of giving, Geeksboro and Acme Comics have pledged the full 100 percent of proceeds from ticket sales to purchase comic books for teenagers in Guilford County who are currently receiving assistance from the Exchange Club Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse of North Carolina, Inc.

“There are a lot of wonderful toy and donation drives that are geared toward helping young people receive gifts during Christmas,” Scott relates, “but for many older kids and teenagers, there’s a great likelihood that they won’t receive a holiday gift that is age-appropriate.”

Comic books, observes Scott, are a cost-effective gift option (instead of electronics or video games) that provides a benefit beyond entertainment as they engage and inspire the reader’s imagination. Acme Comics general manager Stephen Mayer concurs. “Comic books are a great way to promote literacy, and stories of superhero altruism often inspire good deeds in real life,” Mayer added.

In October, Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands provided live musical accompaniment for a special Halloween screening of the 1920 silent horror classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari at Geeksboro, and Scott was eager to repeat the collaboration for this yuletide event.

“(Crystal Bright) has this infinitely cool, joyous spirit that embodies the warmth of the holiday season,” he observes. “Anyone who gets the collaborate with Crystal Bright is blessed. Anyone who gets to collaborate with her twice? Doubly so!” All attendees will receive a special holiday gift and automatically be entered in a drawing to win other prizes. ‘Tis the season to be geeky – and it’s all for a good cause!
