US Figure Skating Championships return

The Greensboro Coliseum staff held a special press conference last week to announce that the US Figure Skating Championships is returning to Greensboro in January 2015 after first being hosted in the Gate City in 2011. Organizers and supporters at the press conference credited a community team effort, outstanding facilities and hospitality in 2011 for the championships’ return.

Since 2011, the championships have added juvenile and intermediate competitions, which will increase the number of competitors from 250 to 350. About 500 people volunteered the last time Greensboro played host, and more are expected in 2015. The increase in size and popularity will likely bring in more money too, promoters said, adding that the 2011 championships brought in $27 million.

The championships will run Jan. 18-25, 2015, and all-event passes are expected to go on sale Feb. 1, 2013 with mini-packages and individual tickets going on sale as the event draws closer.
