Monitoring the economic pulse of the Triad

Microbrews and Macroeconomics

Economic activity comes in a variety of forms — some top-down from the state and some bottom up from the community. You can guess which process involves the larger dollar figures.

The NC Department of Transportation has awarded Lanford Brothers of Roanoke, Va. a $6.3 million contract to rehabilitate nine bridges in Guilford County, including US Highway 220/Wendover Avenue over Interstate 85, Bessemer Avenue over US Highway 220/70/29, Freeman Mill Road over West Lee Street and US Highway 29/70A, US Highway 421 over Alamance Creek and Wendover Avenue over US Highway 220. The work is scheduled to begin as early as Thursday and is expected to be completed by November 2014.

At the other end of the spectrum, Hoots Roller Bar & Beer Co. is working on standing up a microbrewery and bar in the former Hoots Roller Mill in the West End neighborhood in Winston-Salem. The business has launched a Kickstarter page to raise money for the project. The campaign has set a goal of $20,000. As of Monday, 24 backers pledging a total of $2,359 had signed on. A video posted by Eric Weyer states that the funds will be used to pay for a keg washer and for the first order of produce to get the first batch of ales and lagers started.
