MAN DIES WHILE BEING CUFFED
A man banned from Wesley Long Hospital after being evaluated by medical staff died earlier Sunday while being arrested by a Greensboro police officer for violating the ban.
Steve Christian, 60, no known permanent address, came to the hospital’s Emergency Department at approximately 1:17 am Sunday seeking medical treatment. While awaiting treatment, he was disruptive and combative toward medical staff. Per hospital protocol, he was banned and escorted out of the building by hospital security.
Officer D.J. Williams, who was working secondary employment at the hospital, was summoned by hospital security to assist with removing Christian from the premises. Williams issued Christian two citations for Disorderly Conduct and Communicating Threats, and ordered him off the property.
Christian walked out of the hospital towards Elam Avenue in apparent compliance with the officer’s orders. However, once he neared Elam Avenue he turned around and walked back toward the entrance of the hospital violating the trespassing laws. At that time, Officer Williams advised Christian he was under arrest. While Christian was being placed in handcuffs, he became unresponsive.
Wesley Long medical staff quickly evaluated Christian while he was outside the hospital entrance, detected a pulse, and called for additional staff to take him back inside the hospital for additional treatment.
Christian’s condition quickly deteriorated and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced deceased by medical staff at 3:37 am.
Christian’s body will be sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s office in Raleigh for autopsy.
The death is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation at the request of the Greensboro Police Department. The Greensboro Police Department’s Professional Standards Division is also investigating the incident to determine whether or not department policies were followed. Officer Williams has been placed on administrative duty as is protocol.
Officials from Wesley Long Hospital are cooperating with the investigation. !
