Bopping to the 60s

by Lenise Willis

Next up for Kernersville Little Theatre is The Marvelous Wonderettes, a play about an all-girl band that takes the audience through a musical journey, starting at their 1958 prom through their 10-year high school reunion. The production includes classics from the 50s and 60s including It’s My Party, Lollipop, and Leader of the Pack.

“It’s just so much fun,” said Rachel Schroeder of KLT. “When we see so much negativity in our day-to-day lives, it’s nice to be able to escape. These are the songs that everyone seems to know, even younger folks who were not around in the 50s and 60s.”

“It’s family friendly,” added David Lane, musical director. “It’s a snapshot of some of the popular music from that era. The songs are fun, as well as the characters. It also uses the familiar settings of prom and a reunion to showcase the relationships of four girls with not only the guys in their lives, but also with each other.”

Lane also musically directed Theatre Alliance’s former production of the show. Of course each production is different and poses different challenges.

“Anytime we’re in the Körners Folly, we’re faced with several restrictions and limitations with regard to set and equipment so as not to damage the historic landmark,” he said. “The theatre is also up three flights of narrow stairs, so everything we need must be able to be loaded upstairs.”

Myla O’Brien, director, added that the musical is, “light, filled with laughter, good times, and, of course, music.” To add to the evening’s enjoyment, there will also be a wine and cheese reception during intermission. !
