DJ Flash

by Ryan Snyder

Origin of handle: When I ran track in high school, I was so fast friends called me Flash and the name stayed with me because I was so fast on the turntables.

Full name: Rodney Kenan

What I play: Hip hop, R&B, reggae, go-go, Baltimore house and reggaeton

Catch me at: Mondays at Club Menage, some Thursdays at Club Rumba, some Fridays at Club Spotlite and some Saturdays at Lounge 2800.

Got in the game: At the tender age of 14.

Why I do it: I used to carry crates for my uncle who was a professional DJ. I used to watch him closely and enjoyed the way he drove the party. Listening to him and other great DJs gave me the desire to become one too.

Influences: My biggest influence was Jazzy Jeff. I would go to Philly every summer as a youngster to all the underground parties listen and learn from Jazzy Jeff. Also, Cash Money, Lightning Rich, Grand Wizard Rashin, Tat Money and Cosmic Kev.

First pro gig: A block party at Carolina Beach

Favorite technique: Transforming

Personal playlist: neo soul, hip hop, jazz and spoken word

My gear: Two 1200 Technics 1200s, Vestax 05 Pro and Serato
