DJ SWEET

by Ryan Snyder

DJ Handle: DJ Sweet T

How I got it: When I was younger my brother use to call me Sweet T, so it just kind of landed on me.

Real name: Terri Johnson

What I play: I play a huge variety of music; hip hop, dancehall, R&B, pop, Top 40

Catch me at: I travel so I am not playing anywhere in particular on a regular. I guest DJ at several different spots, festivals, and shows across the East Coast, from North Carolina to Atlanta, Washington DC, Virginia and soon will be traveling to NYC.

Upcoming shows: Nov. 6, the 1st Annual SDJF Domestic Violence Fundraiser Gala w/ special awards presentation at New Light Baptist Church Family Life Center. I am excited for this gig because it’s for a great cause. So many people are affected by domestic violence.

Got in the game: I began DJing when I was 12 years old and just recently, about two and a half years ago, I started to take music more seriously and began learning the art of DJing, becoming more versatile with music and culture, and investing big money into it. My mother use to let my sister and me throw parties at our house because she felt there was no safe place for us to go and have fun. The parties grew so big we moved to our garage and then to our basement known as “The Castle.” I wasn’t a dancer so I sat with the DJ and was amazed at how much control he had over the entire mood for the party. One night the DJ was running late so he asked me to play until he got there and from that night I knew I was going to be great at this. People started requesting that I play… and I did!

Why I do it: I absolutely love music. I am great at what I do and I love DJing, interacting with the crowd and giving them a cool experience! I DJ for the ladies because I know that if the ladies move, then the guys will follow.

Influences: To be honest, I never really followed up on earlier DJs or MCs.. I admire females in the game though. They are huge inspirations to me.

First pro gig: Zion Bar & Grille

Studio work: I am currently in the works of putting out a single and hopefully releasing a mixtape January 2011 (Sweet 16 Vol. 1)

Favorite technique: Blending

Signature mix: I continue to surprise myself, the more mixes I do, so I am not sure which mix I am most proud of.

Personal playlist: I like listening to good music, if the artist actually have something to say (lyrically) and a nice rhythm/beat then I am listening to it regardless of the genre. My favorite is soulful music.

Favorite albums: I am a huge fan of Janet Jackson. I love all her albums, especially Janet.

My gear: Pioneer 800 CDJs, Rane Mixer, Serato Scratch
