Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend
When I was a little girl, I fell in love with a man that promised me diamonds every spring. I didn’t know it then, but it was the kind of love that lasts forever. It was the kind of love that you don’t even know you are in until you can’t get out of it. It was a difficult love though.
It still is. We break up every October. He tells me that he has to go away for a while, and there is nothing I can do to stop him. I let him go in the Fall because I know he will return to me in the Spring with diamonds.
When he leaves, all I can hold on to are the memories of him. I remember the first time I fell in love with him. I was only seven years old, and I was much too young to deal with such emotions. Two years later, he gave my first broken heart. It was the fall of ‘97, and my family was gathered to celebrate in his honor. We were ready for a celebration that none of us had ever experienced before. That celebration never happened. He made a few mistakes down in Florida that cost him everything he had, so instead of celebrating together, we grieved together that night.
He came back the next year, and he has been back every spring since then, but he still hasn’t given us the chance to celebrate. He is so hard to love sometimes.
Even though he disappears for four months during the year, he is the one thing I cling to for the other six months. I know that when everyone else lets me down, he’ll be there. I have celebrated every one of my birthdays with him too.
The other faces at my birthday celebration change every year, but not his. He is always there.
It might sound unconventional, but I want you to love him too. I don’t mind sharing him with others because I know he has a lot to give, and I can’t be selfish. I want you to love him as much as I do.
At times, it won’t be easy, but it will eventually be worth it. He has a lot to offer you. He is patient. He won’t rush you into anything. He believes in tradition, and he is sentimental. Most importantly, he knows how to bring people together in a way that only he can.
He is America’s pastime, and I want you to fall in love with him.
Baseball doesn’t get the kind of love that is given to football and basketball. Statistics show a decline in popularity over the past few decades. We can change that if we try to remember why we fell in love with baseball in the first place.
We can start by supporting the handful of “diamonds” in and around the Triad. Minor League Baseball offers a unique experience because you’re watching the future of baseball. I can’t promise that you will fall in love instantly, but I can promise that you’ll have fun trying. People say that baseball is boring, but if you ever go to a Winston-Salem Dash or Greensboro Grasshoppers game, look at the faces in the crowd. Not one of them will look bored. I promise.
Even if you think the game is boring, baseball offers you a unique opportunity to create memories that last a lifetime. Give the game a chance. Go out to the ballparks this spring and summer, and enjoy the three-hour break from life.
I was always told to fall in love with people, not things. But every time I see a diamond, I fall in love all over again. !
