Popular wing spot celebrates recent expansion

Over the past seven years, Daryl and Angela Townsend have seen their East Coast Wings & Grill New Garden Road location steadily grow.

The Townsends, who hold president and vice-president positions in Townsend Restaurant Group, Inc., own a total of four restaurants: East Coast Wings & Grill Greensboro, 1579 New Garden Road; East Coast Wings & Grill Kernersville, 800 North Main St.; Subway Welcome Plaza, Welcome, and Subway Mount Tabor Place, Winston-Salem.

“We recently had our 7th anniversary at New Garden Crossing, and the bay next to us has been unoccupied all that time,” said Daryl. “Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a steady increase in guest count as the center has expanded with Marshall’s, Home Goods and Dollar Tree. Expanding the restaurant allows us to better serve those new customers.”

East Coast Wings New Garden sells over 10,000 wings per week and offers 75 flavors in the range of eight different heat indexes. Daryl’s favorite wing flavor is Bourbon Street with “hot” heat index, while Angela’s favorite is “X-Hot” with “Magnificent 75 Flavor.” “Our X-Hot heat index took first in the nation at the National Wing Competition in Buffalo, NY!” Daryl added.

Work at the New Garden location took place from early October to early December and made way for an additional 94 seats. It also allowed for some upgrades including a new bar and glass-enclosed indoor/outdoor patio for dining.

“In the new bar area we installed ten new televisions and a long-draw system that allows us to offer 24 drafts, including some popular local craft beers,” said Daryl. “In the existing dining room, we built a new hostess/reception area and upgraded all the chairs and tables. We still have a flexible floor plan – we frequently serve large parties – but the remodel includes more booths, and they’re wider and taller.”

The expansion also includes a dedicated take-out area, for better service with to-go orders.

Though fresh jumbo wings are obviously the specialty, they also carry Angus burgers, sliders, sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads, quesadillas, ribs, fish ‘n chips and more.

East Coast Wings was founded in 1995 in Winston- Salem. In 2001 two entrepreneurs, Sam Ballas and Steve Kontos, purchased the restaurant and began to franchise – selling the first franchised unit in 2003.

There are currently 33 East Coast Wings locations operating, two corporate locations and 31 franchised. There are currently eight additional locations in development for 2015.

To celebrate all the new features, an Expansion Celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 16, and will feature 25-cent wings and $1 draft beers. !
