Enjoy NC wine in Downtown Winston-Salem

This week is a big one of celebration in Winston-Salem—a celebration of North Carolina Wine and downtown chefs.

The eleventh annual Salute! NC Wine Celebration will take place Saturday along 4th Street.

It’s a day-long festival of North Carolina wineries offering tastings and a purchase of this year’s harvest, in addition to food trucks, musical entertainment and a little bit of education thrown in. A great selection of downtown restaurants increases your dining options.

As part of the festivities, a series of wine dinners and special events take place to connect chefs, wine makers and diners to introduce them to North Carolina wine and how it’s making its mark in the wine world.

On Friday, the public is also invited to attend An Evening of Southern Food, this year featuring Celebrity Chef Francine Bryson with special guests Rien Fertel of New Orleans and Sam Jones of Greenville, N.C. Bryson is a national pie champion and was a finalist on CBS’s The American Baking Competition. She’ll be sharing tips and recipes from her first book, Blue Ribbon Baking from a Redneck Kitchen. Tim Grandinetti, who was recently named Triad’s Best Chef by YES! Weekly readers, will also make a guest appearance.

Salute! The NC Wine Celebration hits the streets Saturday from 12 until 6pm. There, you’ll be able to taste your way around North Carolina without ever leaving downtown. And you’ll have access to Food and Wine University, where “students” under the tent get to swirl, sip and savor as notable chefs do recipe demonstrations with select winemakers. A few lucky winners will be able to test the chef’s creations. On the docket:

1:30 — Chef Richard Miller, Graze Restaurant & Raylen Vineyards Grilled NC Shrimp and Oysters with Good Night Brothers Country Ham Cucumber Salad, Tossed Local Greens Lemon mustard vinaigrette

2:30 — Chef Travis Myers, Willow’s Bistro, 3rd Annual ALL-LOCAL CHAL- LENGE with Minglewood Farms & Nature Preserve & Jones von Drehl Vineyards & Winery Duck 2ways with Harmony Ridge duck breast, pulled confit leg, duck dirty risotto, wilted Cheshire Farms dino kale, bacon jam & roasted duck jus.

3:30 — Chef Kristina Fuller, Crafted- The Art of the Taco (coming to WS this fall) & Raffaldini Vineyards Bahn Mi Taco Bulgogi beef, pickled daikon radishes, carrots and onions jalapeño, white sauce, cilantro

4:30 — Pastry Chef Tirra Cowan, Black Mountain Chocolate & Lake James Cellars Winery Dark Chocolate with Levering Orchards Sour Cherry Compote Remaining events this week are: Small Plates and Pairings with Biltmore Wine at Meridian Restaurant (all week through Saturday); An Italian Gathering at Quanto Basta with Raffaldini Vineyards on Thursday. On Saturday evening, Spring House will host a wine dinner with Raylen Vineyards; and a Night of Jazz at Carolina Vineyards and Hops on Saturday from 4pm-until.
