Falls second to announce candidacy for District 1

Luther Falls, a businessman, will announce his candidacy for the District 1 seat on Greensboro City Council at a press conference on Tuesday at the Vance-Chavis branch of the public library at the corner of Benbow Road and Lee Street on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Falls came within 51 votes of unseating Councilwoman Dianne Bellamy-Small in 2005. The once and future candidate issued a public statement in March denouncing what he termed a “recall request of Councilmember Dianne Bellamy-Small by Councilmember Florence Gatten.” In fact, Gatten called for Bellamy-Small’s resignation; a group of registered voters led by gas station owner Jonathan Wagstaff later initiated a recall process.

Bellamy-Small faces a recall election on Aug. 21. She has not publicly announced whether she will be a candidate in the general election. Aside from Bellamy-Small, Falls will have at least one other competitor: Realtor Tonya Clinkscale announced her candidacy last month.
