by Mark Burger

For its February event, the Artistic Connection will bring together a panel of talented documentary filmmakers to discuss how to turn the real story into the reel story.

The event will take place Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Altair Casting & Production in Winston-Salem. Scheduled to attend are documentary filmmakers Mary Dalton, whose credits include the documentary shorts Martha in Lattimore (2005) and Living in the Overlap (2014); Sandy Dickson, whose co-directing credits include the award-winning documentaries Freedom Never Dies: The Legacy of Harry T. Moore (2001) and Negroes With Guns: Rob Williams and Black Power (2006); and Keith Barber, who made the 2010 high school football documentary Any Given Friday “” and is a former YES! Weekly staff member.

The three filmmakers will discuss their own experiences in documentary filmmaking, the wealth of potential topics here in the region, and opportunities for documentary filmmakers.

This event is open to aspiring and current industry professionals, those interested in the ongoing strides made in animation, and those who perhaps hope to make a career change into the field. Attendees are encouraged to bring business cards and resumes.

The Artistic Connection, which will mark its first anniversary in March, has previously presented events featuring producers, writers, actors and technicians and encompassed many aspects of film production. It’s a way to bring together industry professionals to discuss and perhaps demonstrate their areas of expertise, talk about projects (past, present and future), and exchange ideas and opinions about the current state of filmmaking here in North Carolina and abroad.

“We at the Artistic Connection will do all we can to help those who want to work in North Carolina, all over North Carolina,” said Amanda Hoey, Artistic Connection’s founder and organizer. !

The Artistic Connection documentary-filmmaker panel discussion will take place 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 at Altair Casting & Production, 703 Coliseum Plaza Court, Winston-Salem. Admission is $5.
