Fourth-Grade Teacher Named District Employee of the Month
In the auditorium of Nathanael Greene Elementary, on a stage where she first stood as a student, fourth-grade teacher Shannon Wicker was named the GCS Employee of the Month for June 2016. On Tuesday, cheering students, staff and parents celebrated her news during a pre-EOG pep rally.
Wicker has taught at her former school for 13 years, focusing on science and math. But her helpful attitude extends to the whole school, students and staff included. Her service-learning efforts to increase recycling at the school have helped students win Guilford County recycling contests for the past several years.
Wicker also volunteers to lead a summer math boot camp for students to help prepare them for the next grade level and tutors students after school and during break. She also planned multiple fundraisers to make sure all students could attend a field trip to the Outer Banks.
“She is an awesome example for our students at school,” says colleague Barbara Crumpton. “She shows them compassion and kindness. Mrs. Wicker spends many evenings calling parents and discussing their child’s progress. She works hard to ensure that each child is a success at Nathanael Greene!”
As Employee of the Month, Wicker will receive a $50 gift card from Sam’s Club, which has given more than $6,000 to outstanding GCS employees since 2005. During the month of June, her photo will hang at the district’s central offices, at Nathanael Greene Elementary and at the Sam’s Club on Wendover Avenue.
