Foxy Moxy reveals some of June’s Art Hop highlights

by Foxy Moxy

June’s Gallery Hop is ready to light up the night in the Arts District. You can now count on plenty of First Friday festivities taking to the streets! Enjoy outdoor performances this month including The Back Door, a live ongoing music series that takes place on Liberty Street outside the Artists on Liberty Building, the entrancing belly dancers of Three Graces Entertainment and Raku pottery firing demos courtesy of Earthbound Arts.

One unique dance duo certain to heat up the streets this month is Exuro Fire Performance, featuring Cypress and Kara. Spinning, hooping and handling an impressive array of flaming implements, Exuro blends an eclectic fusion of funky tribal dance with flirty circus tricks. This is one pair of hotties who really know how to play with fire! You can catch them at the intersection of 6th and Trade Street with shows at 8 PM and 9 PM. For more information on these dynamic flame-tamers, visit them on the web at

A terrific Hop stop this month is happening at one of my favorite places for eclectic art in Winston-Salem, the Urban Artware Gallery. The gallery offers new works from this month’s featured artist, Julie Armbruster, a mixed media painter working in pigment, charcoal, encaustic and ink.

In her artist’s statement Julie describes her recent work as an catalogue of repetitive images on the destructive behavior of humanity and its insistence on being the exception to the laws of nature. This show is part of her ongoing process of reflection on these themes, while injecting elements of humor and hope.

Dovetailing nicely with the previous exhibit is Pattern, a show of works by Laura Lashley at SEED Gallery. SEED Gallery is housed within Urban Artware and both can be found at 207 West 6th Street in the heart of the Arts District. Be certain to catch both of these shows in one convenient Gallery Hop stop.

In other Arts District news, one sad note: we bid Jack and Becky of Young’s Vintage Home and Garden a fond adieu. Your friends, neighbors and Trade Street shoppers will miss the bright and original personality you added to the independent retail store aura in the area. We wish you all the best with future endeavors.
