Holiday Wish List: TV on DVD (and Blu-ray)

“A FRENCH VILLAGE: 1940 – SEASON 1” (MHz Networks): A four-DVD collection ($39.95 retail) of all six episodes from the inaugural 2009 season of the acclaimed French-language drama series (originally titled Un village francais) that explores the impact of German occupation on a small village on the French/ Swiss border in 1940.

“HAWAII FIVE-O”: THE FIFTH SEASON (CBS DVD/Paramount): Surf’s up – and so is crime – in all 25 episodes from the 2014-’15 season of the award-winning CBS series based on the long-running Jack Lord series, with Alex O’Loughlin the “new” Steve McGarrett, backed by Scott Caan, Grace Park, Daniel Dae Kim, Chi McBride and Jorge Garcia. The six-DVD collection ($64.99 retail) includes special features.

“HBO COLLECTIONS” (HBO): For holiday gift-giving, HBO has released “The Wire: The Complete Series” on Blu-ray ($199.99 retail), “Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Series” on DVD ($199.99 retail) and Blu-ray ($239.99 retail), “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” on DVD ($19.98 retail) and Blu-ray ($24.98 retail), and “Game of Thrones” Seasons 1 and 2 in steelbook sets (each retailing for $79.98).

“THE MAKING OF THE MOB: NEW YORK” (Anchor Bay Entertainment): Ray Liotta narrates this eight-part AMC mini-series tracing the rise of the Mafia in New York City, combining re-enactments and testimonials. The DVD retails for $39.98, the Blu-ray for $49.99.

“MCHALE’S NAVY”: THE COMPLETE SERIES (Shout! Factory): A 21-DVD collection ($169.99 retail) of all 138 episodes (plus bonus features) from the entire 1962-’66 run of the ABC comedy series, for which Ernest Borgnine, Tim Conway, and the series earned Emmy nominations.

“MI CORAZON ES TUYO” (Cinedigm): A three-DVD collection ($19.97 retail) of the 2014 season of the popular Mexican telenovela (also known as My Heart is Yours), with Silvia Navarro as an exotic dancer who doubles as a nanny for the children of a wealthy, widowed businessman (Jorge Salinas). In Spanish with English subtitles.

“PENNY DREADFUL”: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON (Showtime Entertainment/Paramount): Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and gorgeous Eva Green return, in all 10 episodes from the 2015 season of the awardwinning Showtime series created by executive producer John Logan, which brings together the classic characters of monster lore, including Harry Treadaway as Victor Frankenstein and Rory Kinnear as his creation, Reeve Carney as Dorian Gray, and Billie Piper as Lily Frankenstein. The DVD collection retails for $42.99, the Blu-ray collection for $49.99 – both boasting special features for “Dread”-heads.

“POWER RANGERS LIGHTSPEED RESCUE”: THE COMPLETE SERIES (Saban Brands/Shout! Factory): The Power Rangers battle the aptly-named Diabolico in all 40 episodes from the 2000 season of the self-explanatory fantasy adventure series, one of many incarnations of the popular “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” The five-DVD collection retails for $19.97.

“THE REBEL” (Timeless Media Group): Nick Adams played Confederate war veteran Johnny Yuma from 1959-’61 in this prime-time ABC Western series for which Johnny Cash crooned the title tune. “The Rebel: Season One” ($29.93 retail) includes all 36 episodes from the 1959-’60 season, “The Rebel: Season Two” ($34.99 retail) all 40 episodes from the ‘60- ’61 season, and Timeless Media Group has also released the self-explanatory 11-DVD collection “The Rebel: The Complete Series” ($59.97 retail) including all 76 episodes plus bonus features.

“RED VS. BLUE”: SEASON 13 (Cinedigm): The animated sci-fi shenanigans continue in the popular on-line series, its release timed to coincide with the release of the game Halo 5: Guardians. The DVD retails for $14.95, the DVD/ Blu-ray combo for $24.95.

“REIGN”: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON (Warner Home Video): A five-DVD collection ($44.98 retail) of all 22 episodes from the 2014-’15 season of the award-winning CW “historical fiction” costume drama, focusing on the early life of young Mary, Queen of Scots in 16th-century France. Trivia note: Kane is an actual descendant of Mary.

“THE SAINT”: SEASONS ONE AND TWO (Timeless Media Group): Before he was James Bond, Roger Moore played the dashing and debonair playboy Simon Templar, created by Leslie Charteris, in an ITV series that became a global phenomenon. This DVD collection ($44.99 retail) includes all 39 episodes from the 1962 and 1963-’64 seasons, with guest stars Oliver Reed, Julie Christie and future Bond girls Honor Blackman and Shirley Eaton. Timeless Media Group has also released “The Saint: The Complete Series,” a self-explanatory 33-DVD (!) boxed set ($199.98 retail) including all 118 episodes from the entire 1962-’69 run of the series plus exclusive bonus features.

“SOUTH PARK”: THE COMPLETE EIGHTEENTH SEASON (Comedy Central Home Entertainment/Paramount): Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s animated, awardwinning Comedy Central juggernaut continues – but Kenny doesn’t get killed as often – in all 10 episodes from the 2014 season, where it earned an Emmy nomination as Outstanding Animated Program, now available on DVD ($29.99 retail) and Blu-ray ($39.99 retail). !
