When Nicole Kidman walked out on Woody Allen, he had to find a replacement for his latest film. So he tested umpteen actresses until he found just what he wanted in British actress Lucy Punch. A relative unknown, Punch has had roles in “The Class” on CBS, “Hot Fuzz” and “Ella Enchanted.” She also will star in “Young Americans,” a comedy scheduled for January release. At this writing, Woody hasn’t named his film, which will feature the formidable cast of Antonio Banderas, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin. Shooting begins this summer in London. Remember the name Lucy Punch (how could you forget that one?). Want to get your own TV show? One way is to have eight babies. Octomom Nadya Suleman has landed a reality-show deal. Wouldn’t it be fun if Conan O’Brien or Dave Letterman booked her for an interview on their latenight shows, and she showed up with all 14 bambinos? And speaking of babies, how’s this for a plot? Halle Berry will star in The Plot. This about a couple desperate to have a baby who find themselves in a terrible situation when they learn the surrogate they hired to carry the baby is insane. The film is based on the book by Kathryn Mackel. Take a good long look at any recent picture of Jack Nicholson. It’s a fresh face, the way one looks after a little tuck here and there. He is joining the cast of an asyet-untitled romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson. This about a professional softball player (Witherspoon) torn between two men. One a solid businessman, the other a charming ballplayer. As I understand it, Jack will play the father of the girl. Anytime you would like to see him in person, go to a Lakers basketball game. He’s always there. Cher is in the news again. This time around she is suing Universal Music Group. Her claim is the company ripped off her and the heirs of Sonny Bono to the tune of $5 million. And just in case you didn’t know, the lady’s full name is Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere, and she has two offspring: Chastity and Elijah Blue. So, shoot me. I’m not a Conan O’Brien fan. He’s a bit too “cutsie frenetic” for my taste. I prefer the laid-back type, but as the French say, chacun son gout. If you saw his opening show, you saw him running from New York to Los Angeles. For me it was like watching a promo for What Makes Sammy Run. And to fans of Jay Leno: Don’t be sad. He’ll be back in September at 10 p.m. on NBC.

BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Leonardo DiCaprio in the Big Apple taking in play after play and giving audiences a thrill when they caught sight of him. … Coming out this way? Want to see celebs? Try the Grove and the adjacent farmers market in the Fairfax District. They could be and are shopping there, just as “me and thee.” … And speaking of sightings, Lindsay and Paris have gone “undercover.” No recent skipping up and down Sunset Boulevard. … And did you know that Errol Flynn was quite a drinker. I’m told he would inject oranges with vodka using a hypodermic syringe and bring them to his film sets.
