Julie Nugent

by Brian Clarey

We’re gonna start calling Julie Nugent the Gate City Gunslinger after she won the Rock Paper Scissors Tournament at the Flying Anvil last week because of her furious quick-draw technique and her famous last name, though she’s no relation to the man who penned “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang.” Greensboro’s Nugent took the trophy and the $500 prize money in a showdown with Katie Southern because, in a nutshell, paper covers rock. “I try to throw paper first,” she says, “because everybody throws rock.” The Greensboro resident and graduate of Bishop McGuinness High was cheered on by her dad and her stepmom, Bud and Joanne Miles, and driven by her poor showing in last year’s competition. “I didn’t make it past the first round,” she says, “but I’ve been practicing. I knew this day would come.” She plans to use the money to make repairs on her ’99 Acura, and if there’s any left over, we suggest she enroll in her namesake’s bow-hunting course up in the wilds of Michigan.
