According to our friends at Wikipedia, “Essential oil of lavender has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.” That’s not necessarily true of classical burlesque dancer Lila Lavender, who has been known to get a little dirty and has likely caused some swelling at some point in her career. “I was a ballerina for many years,” she says. “I got injured, so I stopped dancing. Then someone sent me an e-mail to try out for [Greensboro-based burlesque troupe] Stiletto Starlets. I had no idea what burlesque was, and I’ve been doing it ever since. Now, two years later, Lila Lavender has her own website (www.lilalavender. com) and spots on several Carolina burlesque squads including the Cherry Bombers, Fanatique de Glam, the Carolina Heartbreakers, the Demon Dolls and Ballyhoo Burlesque. The NC burlesque scene, she says, “seems to have exploded out of nowhere…. When I first started, I did two shows in one year. This year I did six shows just in January.” See her Friday night at Carrboro’s Cat’s Cradle, and look for monthly shows with Fanatique de Glam at Greensboro’s Artistika starting this spring.
