Not many people can claim they started cooking when they were 3 years old.

Scotty Bonds can trace his interest in cooking back that far, when his dad started showing him around the kitchen. Bonds began making desserts with a Martha Stewart snickerdoodle recipe, moving on to cupcakes when he grew bored with the simplicity of cookies. After graduating Northern Guilford High School in 2010, Bonds launched Scotty’s Kupcakery, initially selling his creations in his father’s hair salon.

“I used to be really good at basketball and not everybody can make it to the NBA so I started thinking about things that were more realistic,” Bonds said.

He was already watching the Food Network daily, and in less than three years his business has grown enough that an investor contacted him about opening up a dessert bar in downtown Greensboro.

He’s made around 100 different kinds of cupcakes so far, and two of his popular flavors — red velvet and banana pudding — are featured at Tavo on Elm Street. In the fall, Bonds won first place for the “One in a Million” category for his unique ultimate Reese’s cupcake and second place for Best Cupcake in the Cupcake Wars of North Carolina. He also does personal catering, including private dinners.
