Local Talent: Julie Wilson
Va-va-va-voom! That’s what my grandfather might have said were he to encounter this week’s Page Three model, Julie Wilson, in that slinky little get-up. And Julie would appreciate the pin-up era sentiment. “I like the old-school, the pinup, that whole retro thing,” she says. “I just have a general fascination with it.” She brings these proclivities to light on Aug. 24 for An Evening of Red Hot Burlesque, performing as Betti Bullet for the show at the august Empire Room. After seeing her first burlesque show at NYC’s Slipper Room, she says, “I was like, ‘We have got to bring this to Greensboro.'” She’ll share the bill with Foxy Moxy, Lila Lavendar, Talloolah Love and others to introduce many in the downtown scene to the subtle art of the bump and grind. But can they handle it? “It’s the whole element of the tease,” she says. “I mean, there’s no nudity at all – there’s some skin showing, but it leaves an element to the imagination. Burlesque is not about being perfect – it’s more real women, not a lot of silicone or skinny, anorexic girls. It’s more curvaceous, real women.” We’re sold.
