MUST BE THE HOLY GHOST — MUST BE THE HOLY GHOST
There’s probably a story there, as there always inevitably is with breakupthemed records, that fuels the singleminded, almost neurotic loathing at the heart of the eponymous debut for Jared Draughn’s solo project Must Be the Holy Ghost. The former Classic Case and Distrails frontman draws creative and emotional spark in past creative affiliations for a collection of four songs that imbues the suffocating sonic presence of Trent Reznor’s How to Destroy Angels with dogged self-defeatism. But in that mentality, there is often catharsis, and in Draughn’s songs, there is an empathetic sense of release. “Better now that it’s over/ Should have fu*ked a second time/ Now I wanna leave all the past far behind,” he sings on opener “Shove My Feelings In the Couch,” a song that recalls the melodic abjection of Classic Case, but also represents an emotional high point as a darker mood takes over.
Must Be the Holy Ghost will perform at the Phuzz Phest Holiday Party, hosted by Krankies on Saturday.
