More Michael Moore

Documentary cinema’s premier muckraker Michael Moore is up to his old tricks in his latest feature, Where to Invade Next, in which he “invades” other countries so he can borrow their ideas for use in the United States.

During Moore’s extended tour, which includes stopovers in Germany, Italy, Finland, France, Slovenia and other European nations, he compares and contrasts their systems of education, penology and healthcare with those in this nation. He visits dignitaries and politicians, emphasizing his “invasion” by planting the American flag wherever he goes.

Armed with an array of sound bytes and news footage, to say nothing of his irrepressible personality, Moore gets his points across sometimes in “laugh-outloud” fashion, but he also has a tendency to spell those points out word by word, syllable by syllable, letter by letter. Point(s) made, move along.

Now, there are instances where the European system appears preferable to the proverbial “our system,” yet Moore tends to keep things simple and pat –basically offering blanket endorsements of their techniques – while once again, for the umpteenth time, taking Corporate America and Big Government to task. Not that they don’t deserve it, of course. But they remain very easy targets.
