[NEEDLE DROP]

Last week we reported that Dance From Above was teaming up with Show of Hands to present a specially curated show on Thursday, September 24. In that column we stated that a DJ, !!! (Chk Chk Chk) lead singer Allan Wilson, would be playing the event. That information was incorrect. The actual artist performing !!! frontman Nic Offer. Sorry for the mix-up.

If you decided it best to sleep in all weekend checking out old DMC World DJ Championships on YouTube (we will never fault you for getting educated on matters pertaining to flipping vinyl) then you missed one hell-of-a goodtime down in Raleigh for Hopscotch. Tycho, an artist who usually tours and performs as a solo outfit, had a full band on stage. Impressive? A little bit. But what was more impressive was that the show brought such force that it actually blew the fuses and caused the set to delay on two occasions. It wouldn’t have been so bad if it happened toward the end of the songs where it cut off, but it kept happening precisely at the peaks and ruined what could’ve been an amazing, flawless set. Needless to say, it was still great ambient music played live. Other artists of note were TV On The Radio; Their set was impressive in terms of song selection, but as one patron pointed out the sound was just flat. That’s never good, but if you knew the songs you could sing until it sounded like you were in the shower listening to it on your Bluetooth speaker.

Adam Graetz, a name you probably recognize from past Dance From Above lineups, and whose art is typically featured all over the venue in the form of digital projections, was handling the imagery for Ace Henderson, an up-and-coming rapper from the Triangle. He had affable swagger about him on stage, which is a nice change of pace from the rap-overyour-CD artists that seemingly have become status quo at hip-hop shows nowadays. Just prior to his performance, Winston-Salem’s Must Be The Holy Ghost rounded out his set for the festival.

The National Folk Festival was in Greensboro this past weekend and we hope you enjoyed some of that. !
