Dinner and some flowers are nice for Valentine’s Day, but they’re also expected and ordinary. Surprise your date this Friday with tickets to one of these local shows and enjoy a romantic, exciting evening of theater. Of course, if your date’s a female, don’t forego the flowers just because we’re going to a show. Surprise us with both because we’re worth it.

If you’re looking for a fun post-dinner show, then check out comedian Rickey Smiley’s show at Greensboro War Memorial Auditorium. For one show only on Friday (Valentine’s Day), Smiley stars in The Love 2 Laugh Valentine’s Day Comedy Show at 8 p.m.

Smiley is the only comedian who has had the honor of hosting BET’s “Comic View” for two seasons. He has also made numerous television and movie appearances over the years and has produced six comedy CDs.

On a musical note, Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra is presenting a special Valentine’s Day performance, too, showcasing music from the ’60s and ’70s. Check out WSsymphony.org for tickets to the concert on Friday at Reynolds Auditorium.

Triad Stage’s UpStage Cabaret is also presenting a musical Valentine’s Day performance, Moondance, A New Cabaret. Performing Thursday through Saturday, the show features an eclectic mix of songs from pop to Broadway performed by the Likewise Jazz Trio.

Attention singles, V-day cynics and cliché haters: There’s something for you this week, too. Touring Theatre of North Carolina presents Over The Edge Thursday through Saturday. The new production features a compilation of short stories centering on failed relationships and personalities in definite need of therapy.

Next Wednesday, Feb. 19, the hit musical Rock of Ages comes to the Greensboro Coliseum as part of the Triad Best of Broadway series. This hilarious, feelgood love story is told through the hit songs of iconic rockers including Journey, Styx, Pat Benatar and Whitesnake.

Coming up on Feb. 20, NC Shakespeare Festival will host a reception to honor educators at the Spirit Center in High Point. NC Shakes invites all educators to attend and enjoy complimentary refreshments, door prizes, entertainment and the opportunity to learn more about their outreach programs. RSVPs are appreciated and can be made by contacting sherri.raeford@ ncshakes.org or 336.841.2273. !
