[PLAYBILL]

Although many theaters in the area are focusing their summer energy on children’s theater camps and outdoor movies, there are a sporadic few performances lingering this week and coming up next month.

Finishing its run Wednesday through Sunday is Theatre Alliance’s Miss Saigon, an adult-themed pop opera about loss and sacrifice. The story centers on an American soldier in the Vietnam War and a Vietnamese girl who fall in love and struggle to find each other after being separated during t he fall of Saigon.

Next week Peppercorn Children’s Theatre presents The Jungle Book at Hanesbrands Theatre August 1-3 and 8-10. The adaptation entwines the characters and short stories of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book. Told using the traditional art of folk storytelling, the play includes animal puppets dancing from tale to tale as the actors use rhythm and movement to paint a brilliant and diverse picture of the jungle.

Next up for the theater will be the production of West Side Story in August.

Next Friday, August 8, Theater Alliance presents a one-night staged reading of John and Jen, a two-person musical that tells the story of Jen and her relationships with the two Johns of her life: her younger brother, who was killed in Vietnam, and her son who is trying to find his way in a confusing world. Readings are free and open to the public, with donations accepted at the door to benefit ACS (AIDS Care Service).

In other news, continuing through August 31 Theatre Alliance patrons can vote for the next season’s shows online at wstheatrealliance.org by clicking on their selection and submitting a donation.

Coming up next for the theater is a one-night-only stage reading of Medea, an adaptation from the classic Greek tragedy. The reading, which will be hosted on August 15, centers on the myth of Jason, leader of the Argonauts, who has won the dragonguarded treasure of the Golden Fleece with the help of the sorceress Medea. After marrying Medea and fathering her two children, Jason abandons her for a more favorable match, never suspecting the terrible revenge she will take. !
