[PLAYBILL]

If you’re looking for a way to escape the March basketball madness, or simply to distract yourself from a disappointing loss, there are several shows in the area this week.

Paper Lantern Theatre Company continues A Bright New Boise, a dark comedy about faith, forgiveness and second chances, Wednesday through Sunday at Hanesbrands Theatre.

Thursday, UNC School of the Arts presents its Symphony Orchestra in Russian Fireworks at the Stevens Center. The concert “captures the fiery spirit of St. Petersburg and Moscow,” with such pieces as Shostakovich’s response to the Sovietera artistic repression, “Fifth Symphony.”

The one-man show, Diary of a Madman, hits Triad Stage Friday and Saturday. Featuring Robert Bowman, the dark comedy features a man who spirals out of reality and into his own fantasy world. Set in St. Petersburg, the show explores the human reaction when faced with mortality.

Friday through Sunday UNC-Greensboro students present Pinocchio at Taylor Theatre. The play is a new, fast-paced version of the classic children’s story and features a tale within a tale. Performances continue next Wednesday through Friday.

Community Theatre of Greensboro is also presenting a youthful classic Friday through Sunday with its production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at its Starr Theatre. Performances continue next Wednesday with a pay-what-youcan showing.

UNC School of the Arts will celebrate J.S. Bach’s 330 th birthday on Saturday by performing some of his great works. The event, presented by UNCSA, Salem College Organ Studio and Kenan Professor of Organ Timothy Olsen, is free and open to public.

Saturday and Sunday Greensboro Ballet presents Snow White … and Some Dwarfs at the Carolina Theatre.

Next week, opening on March 27, is Twin City Stage’s production of Mary Poppins.

If you’re a fan of scarf dancers, acrobats and a beautifully booming orchestra, visit Greensboro Coliseum’s site and snatch up your tickets for Cirque de la Symphonie, which is coming to town April 12. If you haven’t seen a Cirque show yet, put it on your list! !
