Playbill: The week ahead in Triad theater

by Lenise Willis

Friday and Saturday, Open Space Café Theatre presents its fundraising production, The Real House-wipes of Trailer Park Row, an original production written by the theater’s director, Joe Nierle. The musical comedy celebrates the female bands of the 50s and 60s. Also new this week is Triad Stage’s first production of the season, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, at its theater in Greensboro. The play, featuring all of the lies, desire and drama of a Mississippi family at their plantation home, runs Sunday through September 20. Theatre Alliance’s all-male production of Nunsense II: The Second Coming continues to run this week through August 30. The silly comedy features a cast of nuns who are putting on a thank you benefit for their fundraiser supporters. Other than that, the number one excitement for me this week””and parents alike-“”is that schools are back in session (or close to it), meaning we’ll be seeing new and exciting things from UNC Greensboro, UNC School of the Arts, GTCC, A&T and Greensboro College just to name a few. UNCSA alone saw its largest enrollment to date when it opened Tuesday. In other news, Kernersville Little Theatre is a finalist for the Truliant Federal Credit Union’s “Mini Grant” of $1,000. KLT is asking for you help to seal the deal; simply vote for KLT once each day now through August 31 on Truliant’s Facebook page. The grant will support the theater’s Bring a Book to Life project, in which the theater performs a children’s story for local students, as well as gives copies of the book to the students at Kernersville Elementary. This year’s production is The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Also, for any children looking for acting opportunities, Greensboro College is holding auditions for the roles of Jane, 11, and Michael Banks, 9, for its production of Mary Poppins November 5-8. Auditions are Saturday at 1 p.m. at Huggins Performance Center. Participants will be asked to sing a song, read from the script and perform a small dance routine, taught onsite. Those interested should bring an 8×10 photo, resume of any theatre/voice work and sheet music. For more information email
