Protesters: Preserve Planned Parenthood funding

by Eric Ginsburg

About 70 people gathered at Hamburger Square along McGee Street downtown for a pro-choice demonstration starting around noon on Feb. 26. They marched down Elm Street and were met by a number of supportive passersby and drivers. The demonstration comes as Republican lawmakers have proposed government budget cuts that, among other things, threaten funding of Planned Parenthood. Some of the pro-choice advocates traveled from Chapel Hill and Charlotte to attend. The word was primarily spread via Facebook. There was a significant age-range among the attendees, and one held a sign reading “I vote in four years and I don’t forget.” (photo by Eric Ginsburg)
