Council gives green light to apartments near ballpark The Winston-Salem City Council voted unanimously on Monday to approve a site plan and final development plan for an apartment complex across the street from BB&T Ballpark. The approval allows Brookstown Development Partners, a company owned by Billy Prim, to build upwards of 200 units on a 1.5-acre tract to the west of Peters Creek Parkway. Mayor Allen Joines said the project will bring $150 million to $180 million in investment to the area. City/County Planning Director Paul Norby said the overall development of the 22-acre area is expected to be mixed-use — a designation that mixes residences with commercial businesses to encourage pedestrian activity. He said staff agreed to a request by the developer to put off a master plan because the apartment project is separated from the ballpark by a busy thoroughfare that isn’t amenable to pedestrian crossing. During the next phase of development, Norby said, the city will hold the developer to the commitment to produce a master plan. He added that there is still plenty of room for commercial development. — JG Local lawsuit challenging marriage definition dismissed A judge dismissed the lawsuit filed by a number of Guilford, Forsyth and Davie County residents challenging the state’s definition of marriage. Plaintiff Randall Keeney, rector of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Greensboro, said the appeal process would likely take 12 to 18 months, and said the judge did not offer an explanation for the dismissal. The lawsuit had aimed to separate religious and civil marriages, altering the current state definition of marriage. If the lawsuit were successful, it likely would have undermined the proposed changes in the proposed marriage amendment. Faith leaders, the county register of deeds and residents with various connections to the issue filed the lawsuit together in late 2011 and had been waiting to hear the judge’s ruling about whether the case would go forward for nearly two months. — EG
