Senators refuse to stop lawsuit abuse

by Jim Longworth

If ever there was a piece of legislation that we all need to lobby for, it’s HR 420, the Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act, which is once again being introduced by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas).

Sure it would cut down on the number of people suing McDonald’s for serving hot coffee, but mainly it would protect small mom and pop businesses from so many frivolous lawsuits.

As a bonus, the bill would ban malicious liars from what’s known as ‘“forum shopping,’” or ‘“litigation tourism.’” That’s where some idiot keeps suing you for the same thing in multiple jurisdictions. HR 420 would only allow these serial suers to take you to court in the specific jurisdiction where they were allegedly harmed.

Last year Smith introduced the same bill which passed the House. Unfortunately, a bunch of senators refused to vote on it, so the bill died.

We can’t let that happen again.

Each year, lawsuits cost this country over $80 billion, and small business bears the brunt of that cost. Call or write Senators Dole and Burr now, and tell them to get off their butts and pass HR 420.
