Susie’s Hope premieres on UPtv in August

The award-winning independent drama Susie’s Hope will be broadcast nationwide on Sunday, Aug. 3 on UPtv.

The film, directed by Jerry Rees and based on a true story, stars Emmanuelle Vaugier as Donna Lawrence, a young woman who survives a terrifying pit-bull attack. Still traumatized, Donna comes across a badly-abused pit-bull puppy in a neighborhood park and is determined to nurse the dog back to health. In doing so, she overcomes her own fears and re-discovers trust.

Susie’s Hope was filmed in and around many of the locations in North Carolina where the actual events took place. The story of Susie became a cause celebre for animal-rights activists nationwide and led to the passage of what is commonly known as “Susie’s Law,” which mandated stricter legal sentences for those convicted of animal abuse.

The film made its world premiere at the 2013 RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem – with Susie herself attending, no less! – and was one of the festival’s hottest tickets. Since then, it has played at numerous festivals and racked up further accolades and awards, including a Dove Family Seal of Approval.

The cast includes Burgess Jenkins as Donna’s husband Roy, who must also come to terms with his wife’s injuries and subsequent adoption of Susie, Andrea Powell, Lance E. Nichols, Megan Blake, Willette Thompson, and perennial TV favorite Jon Provost (“Lassie”) as Sen. Don Vaughan, who sponsored the “Susie’s Law” bill. Susie is played by Susie, making her big-screen debut.
