DJ handle: SP3aka What it means: ‘Cause I’m not afraid to  sp3ak my mind.

Real name: Benjamin Culpepper What I play: Drum and bass, mostly  imports though Catch me at: Facebass at Orion’s and  Monday Mayhem at Brewski’s Tavern.

Upcoming shows: Aug. 15 at Facebass  with more dates are in the works.

Got in the game: I became a DJ in mid  2005. I’ve been playing private parties and  local bars ever since.

Why I do it: I’ve been immersed in music my whole life. I found electronic dance music in the mid to late ’90s — first going to events, then helping my friends promote the events and working doors. Then one day, I decided that I wanted to know what it felt like to make other people feel the way so many performers have made me feel. The anticipation leading up to playing for people is almost as intense as the feeling of helping someone get lost in the moment. It’s about the feeling — an escape from the grind of life.

Influences: DJ MONK, Chemlab, Ministry, Soul Slinger, Front Line Assembly, Doubting Thomas, Orbital, Andy C, Wilkinson, Stakka and Skynet, Total Science, Photek, Klute, DJ DB, DJ HIVE.

First pro gig: I got the opportunity to set the energy for night by playing for Baby Anne this past Thanksgiving, and also got to share the stage with John B thanks to Top Down Productions out of Charlotte.

Favorite technique: The double drop.

Signature mix: All of them are special in their own way. You can find a few of them through

Personal playlist: Mostly, the music that I play so I can become more adept to playing it.
