by Ryan Snyder

DJ handle: DJ Odi

What it means: An old graffiti writer in my hood growing up used to tag it. When he retired I asked him if I could continue running the tag as my DJ name. He said yes!

Real name: Carlos Castillo

What I play: Drum and bass, jungle

Catch me at: mostly traveling, but I hold residencies in NYC and Charlotte right now.

List upcoming shows: The After Hours Bass Party at Warehouse 29 on Thursday with Crewless, Deafrent, Cloak & Dagger, Math, Mike Soden and MiddleGround.

Got in the game: When I was 9, I started playing with decks. I started playing out at 16.

Why I do it: I couldn’t break or write graffiti so DJing was the next logical step.

Influences: Larry Levan, Andy C, DJ Hype, Little Louie Vega, Todd Terry, DJ Craze, my mom.

First pro gig: NASA, June 22, 1993 Studio work: Mostly engineering for other clients.

Favorite technique: That one thing that makes the sound go bwooooooop a bunch of times…..

Signature mix: The “Bits and Pieces” mixes I have done. Major mashups usually running several decks at a time. Just high-energy fun.

Personal playlist: Everything from salsa to classical. Music is all amazing so why limit your listening?

Favorite albums: Rush — Moving Pictures, Stakka and Skynet — Clockwork, De La Soul — 3 Feet High and Rising, a Tribe Called Quest — People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.

My gear: Technics 1200s, Pioneer CDJs, Rane and Pioneer mixers when possible

I’d like to add: You can be many things in life, but you can never be the man your mother was.
