DJ handle: Aud Ranks

What it means: I was influenced by reggae artists like Shabba Ranks, Cutty Ranks and Nardo Ranks. So I took the name Audio Ranks as a way of saying my sounds are top ranking. Over time it got shortened to Aud Ranks.

Real name: John Ross Patterson

What I play: Mostly funk, soul and a lot of classics. I like soulful, sing-out-loud, feelgood music.

Catch me at: Brewski’s Tavern in Greensboro

Upcoming shows: Sunday nights at Brewski’s for the Sunday Soul Sessions party and for an hour Friday night on 103.1 FM WUAG from 10 to 11 p.m. on “In the Beat of the Night.”

Got in the game: I’ve been spinning since I was in high school, and I graduated in 1989.

Why I do it: I’ve always loved music and I’ve always loved a good party.

Influences: Kool Herc, Red Alert, Mixmaster D, Rich Medina, Mike Nyce, Disco Bee, Kenny Dope, Spinna, Jazzy Jeff, Questlove and Scratch

First pro gig: Don’t remember making much money, but I think it was a party in High Point back when I was still in high school.

Studio work: I used to make beats and record people, but now I’d just rather DJ.

Favorite technique: Blends and the echo chamber.

Signature mix: I took the a capella of Aaliyah’s “Four Page Letter,” played it on 45 and mixed with the dub version of a reggae song called “Sleng Teng” by Wayne Smith.

Personal playlist: Most of the same stuff I play live and some Afrobeat.

Favorite albums: Boogie Down Productions — Criminal Minded

My gear: Two Technics 1200s, Numark mixer and the SL3

I’d like to add: I like having good times with good people, so come hang.
