by Ryan Snyder

DJ handle: DJ Fyre

What it means: I’m currently a firefighter, hence my stage name.

Real name: Kathy Crawford

What I play: I play all music, but I am a bonafide house head

Catch me at: I’m usually playing in Atlanta.

Upcoming shows: I’m playing the Fire and Ice ACC Legends Party this Saturday at the Loft above Venue on Elm Street in Greensboro.

Radio work: HandzOnRadio with Taurus the Bull.

Got in the game: I flirted with DJing the summer of ’83, but I actually started DJing in 2004.

Why I do it: I hadn’t lived in Atlanta long, but I didn’t like the music I was hearing in the clubs and one day I was looking at all the music I had and decided to start DJing.

Influences: Atlanta-based DJ Yusef Terry

First pro gig: Circles II in Atlanta 2004

Favorite technique: Blending two or three songs together, tried and true.

Signature mix: Beautiful Voices of Autumn Equinox, found on my podcast.

Best record I own: The instrumental of “I Got My Mind Made Up” by Instant Funk.

Favorite new music: Afrobeat house music

My gear: Pioneer CDJs and a pioneer mixer.

Website: Editor’s note: If the name Kathy Crawford sounds familiar to ACC basketball fans, it should. She played varsity basketball for NC from ’79 to ’83, remains a Top 10 scorer in school history, is the single-season

field-goal-percentage record holder, an NIT All-American and an aficionado of classic house. She’ll enter the ACC Legends Hall on Saturday before celebrating with a DJ set at Loft.
