DJ handle: Tomie B aka DJ Real

What it means: My partner coined it from the fact that I speak my mind all the time.

Real name: Tomietta Brown

What I play: House, R&B, hip hop, old school and whatever a gig calls for. Music has no limits in my opinion.

Catch me at: Every Saturday from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. on House 90.1FM on WNAA/the Voice. Listen Live at wnaafm. com.

Radio work: I’ve been working with 90.1FM/WNAA since around 1990. I started on the “Massive House Mix” as a radio personality.

Got in the game: 1992

Why I do it: When I was promoting parties, one of the DJs was a no show and the DJ bug that had been lying dormant since I was teenager came to life.

Influences as a DJ: J-Mixx, the “Urban Sound Surgeon” and Ron Pullman of Pullman Soul Movement.

First pro gig: My first wedding gig in 1995 let me know I could carve a niche out to develop this into a business.

Studio work: Currently working on an EP for release sometime in late 2013 to early 2014.

Favorite technique: What the mix calls for when I’m in the mix.

Signature mix: My Whitney Houston remix of “A Song for You” (played only the show and live).

Best record I own: I love all my collection equally, especially due to the fact that not a lot of record stores are open in the US anymore.

Favorite new music: I listen to a lot of music from country to house music. There are no favorites here.

My gear: Technic 1200s and Pioneer mixers are my favorite set-up, but I play on just about anything.

I’d like to add: I love the art of DJing and it saddens me that the true art form is slowly going away to digital sync buttons and software. Don’t get me wrong; I love technology, but it’s just not the same.
