by Ryan Snyder

DJ handle: J-Flex

What it means: Just explains what I do on the turntables

Real name: Joseph Thompson

What I play: Hip hop and R&B

Catch me at: I’m judging the Mix Master Arts (MMA) DJ Battle at 9 p.m. at Syn/Select/Sky on Sept. 18, I’m on the “5 O’Clock Remix” on 102 JAMZ starting at 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, I’m on the “Hip Hop 102 Mix Show” on 102 JAMZ every Friday night between 10 p.m. and 2a.m., and play Saturday nights at Bentley’s Night Club.

Got in the game: I started DJing in the summer of 1987, started college radio in 1993 and then started commercial radio in 1996.

Why I do it: I do it because I love hip hop music, I always wanted to be a part of it.

Influences: Jazzy Jeff, Mixmaster Ice, Cash Money, DJ Scratch and Jam Master Jay.

First pro gig: I can’t remember what I would call my first pro gig, but I did my first party when I was in high school.

Studio work: I’ve been involved on albums with Celinski and Dana Lucci. I’m about to do some work with the Angry Fat Kid (AFK: Illpo and @Showdownbeatz)

Favorite technique: Clean blending, precise beat juggles and scratches that increase the energy of the track that is playing to add a turntablistic feel to the mix.

Personal playlist: I listen to a lot of mixes done by some of my favorite DJs and some of the latest albums that are out like DJ Khaled, Nas, Large Professor, 1982, Elle Varner, Rick Ross, etc.

Favorite albums: Most Jay-Z Albums, Masta Ace — A Long Hot Summer and Disposable Arts.

My gear: Two Technics turntable, Rane Sixty-Two, Macbook Pro
