Sheryl Crow and the Black Crowes new releases

Last year’s beautiful love letter to the life and passion of Joe Strummer has just been released on DVD, packed with bonus material not seen in the original film. Even if you don’t subscribe to the motto that the Clash was “the only band that ever mattered,” I can’t see how any beating heart couldn’t tear up at director Julien Temple’s salute to the purity and soul of a man who despite his fame, walked with the common bloke in humble soles shared by Woody Guthrie and Bob Marley. Narrated by Strummer himself from the sessions of his BBC radio show, the two-hour film and the 100 minutes of bonus interviews are peppered with anecdotes from a who’s who including his bandmates, Flea and Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Don Letts, Joe Ely, Courtney Love, Grandmaster Melle Mel, and directors Jim Jarmusch and Martin Scorsese. Not just a Clash retrospective, the film covers his entire life in music, from the pub-rock 101’ers to his final backing bands, Latino Rockabilly War and the Mescaleros… The audio alchemists of Negativland are back, poised to fry your inner ear with more of their culture-jamming, consumerist dada mirth and musings.

This coming Tuesday brings Thigmotactic, the “band’s” return to song-based compositions, rather than the purely cut-up collage-based manipulations the sound terrorists are know and beloved for. Opening the Seeland Records release is the cryptic voice of Tricky Dick himself in “Richard Nixon Died Today,” and as with each of the 17 tracks on the disc, a lovely CD booklet juxtaposes the song’s lyrics and sound samples with an original accompanying artwork by band leader Mark Hosler, who lists the collage’s “found ingredients” along with the credits of who played what at the song’s recording session. Some of these visual jumping-off points have toured the country in their traveling art show, Negativlandland, and all are for sale on the group’s website. Exploring mystic themes of split pants, Waffle House hicks, Zen rice and cereal bowls as vaginas, this is heady stuff that calls for headphones and a sensory deprivation chamber…
