The Pastabilities are Endless

by Brittany Mollis

I am an advocate of both clever wordplay and delicious pasta. When I was looking for a place to eat in Greensboro, I saw a place called Pastabilites, and I felt as though it was my duty to be there. My family was in town from Ohio, and I wanted to take them somewhere with a local vibe. Pastabilities gave us the feeling of southern hospitality inside a cozy atmosphere.

From the outside, it is hard to tell if Pastabilities is a restaurant or a college team shop with an unusual name. Its front window is decked out in ACC memorabilia, so if your dad is driving, he will confuse it with everything but a restaurant.

Once your dad finally recognizes it as a restaurant and parks the car, you are welcomed into a delicate dining area that invites you to seat yourself. The restaurant is a beautiful arrangement of contradiction. One wall is made of wine bottles to make it feel elegant. The corners have TV’s showing basketball games to make it feel masculine. There are flowers and art, and there are sports plaques and bobble heads.

Pastabilites has just enough to make everyone happy. If you are a pasta lover like me, this is the place to be. Their portions are generous enough that I could not eat all of it. That says a lot, actually. My family ordered variations of pasta, but Pastabilites has more options than just fettuccine or linguini. You are welcome to build your own pasta starting with noodles and choosing sauces, cheeses, herbs and meat. You can also order one of their menu pastas, or you can live dangerously and eat a non-pasta dish. They have a seafood section, a vegetarian section, soups, salads and even pizzas.

I ordered the Spring Chicken, and it was fabulous. It had just enough sauce to add flavor, but it didn’t drown the pasta. For a pasta dish, an appetizer and a soda, my total bill was $16.49. Ipso facto, their prices are highly affordable.

Their drink menu looked extensive. It was two in the afternoon, and I admit to not knowing much about quality alcohol or wine, but if that is your interest, Pastabilites did have an entire wall of wine bottles. I would think that a restaurant with walls of wine bottles probably knows a thing or two about wine.

It is hard for a family to find a place that everyone can enjoy.

If the boy wants pizza then the girl wants shrimp. If mom wants a romantic dinner spot, dad wants to watch the basketball game. Rarely do you find a place that can offer a little bit of everything to satisfy everyone. Pastabilites has a wide variety of quality food at reasonable prices. The atmosphere, like the menu, offers variety. If you want to come watch the game while eating a meal, you can do that here. If you want to go have wine with your girlfriends, you can do that here. If you want to have a special night out with a date, you can do that here. Their “seat yourself” attitude invites you to embrace your options, and treat this little gem however you see fit. Pastabilites is every bit as charming as its name. !
