Triad DJ Profile

Name: DJ Deluxe

Where I got it: I got the name back in 7 th grade from one of my boys when we started a rap group. You know I was the DJ, right? Website: www.myspace.com/djdeluxeinc

Radio station: WJMH 102 JAMZ “The Banga” Monday through Thursday, 10-11 p.m.

Education: Graduated in 2000 from NC State University with a BS in business management.

What I play: Hip hop/R&B/reggae/pop/house/ rock

Where I play it: City Limits Nite Life (Fayetteville), Haven (Raleigh), 40/30 (Raleigh), Sin City (Raleigh), N Club (Greensboro)

Upcoming shows: New Year’s Eve at N Club, Lil Wayne after-party at Stir in Charlotte on Jan. 2 and City Limits Nite Life on Jan. 3

Got in the game: I was a bedroom DJ back in ’89 and developed my skill taping mixshows from local radio. In ‘96 I got my first paid club, so I guess you can say that started my professional career.

Why I do it: I love music, period. The saxophone was my thing throughout school, but when I got to college I got into campus radio and started doing parties for different organizations. I just like to see people having fun.

Influences: DJ Polo, DJ K-Nyce, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Grandmaster Flash

Your first professional gig: In 1996, downtown Wilmington at the Skybar

Favorite technique: Transitions and selections…. gotta know what to play, when to play it, and how to play it!

What you listen to outside of the club: Everything I have to play in the clubs and on the radio plus more

Favorite albums: TI — Trap Muzik, Kanye West — Graduation, Jay-Z — The Blueprint, Justin Timberlake — Futuresex/Lovesounds and Young Jeezy — Thug Motivation 101

I’d like to add: I’ve made multiple appearances on BET’s “Rap City” on the famous “Throwback Thursday” episode in 2005. I’ve also done shows for Diddy, Young Jeezy, T-Pain, Lil Wayne, Outkast and many more.
