UNCSA bestows Giannini Society Award

Doug and Sue Henderson of Winston-Salem are this 2016 recipients of the annual Giannini Society Award, so named for Vittorio Giannini, one of the founders and the first president of UNCSA (University of North Carolina School of the Arts), and awarded to members of the society in recognition of their service and support for the school.

The Hendersons were presented with the award during the commencement ceremony May 7.

“We’re incredibly fortunate and grateful to have Doug and Sue Henderson as friends, supporters and advocates,” said Lindsay Bierman, UNCSA chancellor, in an official statement. “We’re proud and excited to honor them for their extraordinary allegiance to the School of the Arts.”

Added Edward Lewis, chief advancement officer: “Doug and Sue have graciously opened their home many times to introduce the school to new audiences. Most recently, they hosted the Prelude Party for our scholarship fundraiser, NextNow. We are profoundly appreciative of their ongoing support.”

The Hendersons, who have been UNCSA supporters for over 20 years and members of the Giannini Society for 15, co-chaired the 50th-anniversary Guys and Dolls gala fund-raiser last year, as well as the Design and Production Costume Shop fund-raiser years before. They are founding members of the Dance Dean’s Council, the Board of Visitors, and both have served on the UNCSA Foundation Advisory Board. Doug Henderson is the current chair of the Advancement Committee of the Foundation Advisory Board. They have also chaired the Winterlark Gala, the annual fundraiser for the Cancer Patient Support Program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
