Republican Richard Burr is completing his first term in the US Senate. Burr defeated Democrat Erskine Bowles in 2004 in the contest to replace John Edwards, who was then a candidate for vice president on the Democratic ticket with John Kerry. Elaine Marshall defeated fellow Democrat Cal Cunningham in the June 22 runoff, winning the privilege of representing her party’s ticket.
