July is National Ice Cream Month, which is all well and good but since I don’t have any ice cream-related news, I’ll just mention it and move on. July is also the month that President Barack Obama, on a visit to Italy, presented Italian President Giorgio Napolitano with a box of American wines, including a 2008 Raffaldini Vineyards Vermentino, from right here in the Yadkin Valley. And July is when Harpers celebrates the love apple with its Tomato Fest, featuring a menu full of red ripeness. I’m thinking of ordering the gazpacho and Duke’s BLT. And July is the month Triad-area Food Lion supermarkets launches Sabor Latino, a movement to incorporate more than 1,000 Hispanic food products on their shelves. Look for bolillo rolls, tres leches cakes, boniato and jicama. July also sees a deluge of food-related events. On Wednesday you can check out the Undercurrent’s wine dinner to benefit Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test. Call 336.370.1266 to see if they can still squeeze you in. Or you can try the Smuttynose Beer Dinner at Vintage 301, four courses paired with craft brews. Make a reservation at 336.333.3190. Or you can head to 6th & Vine for Dinner and a Movie — on this night they’ll be screening Mrs. Doubtfire at 9 p.m. in the courtyard. Or you can attend Green Drinks Greensboro’s July meeting at the Lindley Park Filling Station at 5:30 p.m. But you should definitely start the day by attending the Alzheimer’s Awareness Tour’s Breakfast Event, which takes place at 8 a.m. at the Park Lane Hotel at Greensboro’s Four Seasons. Make a reservation at 310.374.8434. Whew. On Friday, EarthFare holds a wine and beer tasting to benefit Horsepower therapeutinc learning center. The event stars at 6 p.m. and — bonus — the Walrus will be there. On Saturday, Whole Foods Market doubles down with beginner’s 5K training program which begins at noon (first 20 registrants get a free swag bag) and Taste of Spain, an Iberian celebration of wine and cheese that begns at 4 p.m. Register in the store, if you please. Next week starts off big with a slew of events slated for Tuesday, July 21. As always, the Krankie’s Farmers Market will be open from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. EarthFare in Greensboro holds a Kids in the Kitchen event at 4 p.m. Reserve a spot by calling 336.369.0190. On the other side of the Triad, Whole Foods hosts a store tour at 6 p.m., with dietician Amy Fanjoy. Call 336- 722-9233 to make a reservation because space is limited.
