GONE TRIAD?

An internal e-mail from the Greensboro News & Record obtained by YES! Weekly outlines preliminary changes made to the paper’s faux-alt, GoTriad, in the wake of declining revenues and personnel layoffs. The memo from GoTriad Editor Carla Kucinski to her stable of freelancers, begins, “Yesterday John Robinson told me that GoTriad will no longer be distributed in racks in the Triad. It will only be available online and if you subscribe to Thursday’s paper.” It went on to say that distribution in Winston-Salem will cease, that the paper will save $100,000 on the changes and that Oct. 13 will be the last issue of GoTriad distributed freely in racks.

Reached for comment, N&R Editor Robinson said that the e-mail is “not completely accurate,” though he declined to say which parts were inaccurate, referring questions to Circulation Director Regina Howard-Glaspie. As of press time, Howard-Glaspie had not returned calls for this story.

On a personal note, while it’s a good thing for this newspaper to see one of its rivals come off the street, I can’t help but feel a bit melancholy at the news. I wrote for GoTriad and its precursor, Triad Style, for years with the likes of Nicole Crews, Allison King, Kim Thore and other notable local scribes, and I owe much of my career to my time spent there. I, for one, will miss it.
