THE WRAL ‘POWERHOUSE’
NC Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin’s comparison of Laura Leslie and Mark Binker to Woodward and Bernstein may be a little over the top, but other appellations in the comment thread of Leslie’s Facebook announcement that Binker is joining WRAL-TV as multimedia investigative reporter were not. Goodwin also called the duo “two of the best in the business.” James Protzman, a contributor at the Blue NC blog, called them “a fabulous convergence of talent” and a “powerhouse.” Leslie serves as capitol bureau chief for WRAL, and held the same position for North Carolina Public Radio from 2004 to 2011, before TV snagged her. Binker has likewise worked out of the NC General Assembly for the News & Record for as long as I can remember. I always thought Leslie ruled the beat, but it’s also hard to imagine anything transpiring at the General Assembly that Binker didn’t know about. The mechanics and relationships at the state legislature can be so byzantine that I often went straight past Binker’s stories in the print edition of his paper and devoured the transcripts, video interviews, explanations of votes and redistricting analysis on his blog. Congratulations are in order.
