Call it a Lunch-22

When you walk into a busy restaurant, one of two things can happen: You’re either willing to give it a try because it must be pretty damn good, or you get too anxious from all of the waiting and commotion that you’d rather eat anywhere else.
It’s a lunch-22. On a 45-minute lunch break, with enough time for a sitdown meal with your husband, you decide to eat at the Blue Zucchini & Company Caf and Provisions on North Main Street in High Point. The “Caf and Provisions” portion of the name says it all. Comparable to a restaurant you would find in Asheville, or Charlotte — a trendy little spot with organic and vegetarian selections — it’s a welcome and necessary addition to the Triad.
Try not to go to the Blue Zucchini weekdays between noon and 1 p.m. The lunch rush makes the process of getting seated a bit daunting. Sometimes making a turn into the restaurant parking lot can be tricky, and maneuvering through the lot is difficult on a busy day. It’s in the shape of a horseshoe, with both the entrance and the exit connected to the main road. If you drive through and don’t find parking on your first try, the only way to pull back in again is to take a left onto North Main Street. Remember to recite Carl Winslow’s 3-2-1 mantra while you wait for a break in traffic. If you’re on a limited schedule, you may want to try somewhere else and come back when time is on your side.
On the other hand, if you have about an hour to spend,the Blue Zucchini is definitely worth the trip. The quirky style of the restaurant — retro and bohemian, yet modern and comfortable — makes it appealing to both hipsters and the health-conscious. They serve American comfort foods like soups, salads and sandwiches; they bake most of their breads and pastries in house. They also sell craft beers and artisan wines as well as specialty sodas and soft drinks.
The Blue Zucchini is a family-friendly hot spot, too.
There is a designated seating area in the back corner for “little zuccs” so that kids can enjoy their meal as much as the adults. I’m sure many of you wouldn’t be opposed to sitting apart from your children from time to time.
Another tip: Order the Strawberry Fields salad under the “Ruffage” section of the menu. The strawberries, blueberries and mandarin oranges are perfectly ripe and the chicken is moist and tender — a fine last-minute $2 up-charge. Topped with toasted pecans and a pomegranate-blueberry vinaigrette, the salad really hits the spot.
Don’t forget to reminisce with a frosty glass bottle of Stewart’s crme soda and add 180 calories and 45 grams of sugar to your meal. Who says your whole meal has to be healthy?
