GREENSBORO MAN CHARGED IN GIRLFRIEND’S DEATH

Greensboro police found the remains of Angelique Lynn Sylvester, 38, at a residence on Garden Lake Drive shortly after 10 p.m. on July 12. The next morning, at approximately 4:30 a.m., officers arrested Sylvester’s boyfriend, Donald Thomas Johnson Jr., at the Pleasant Ridge Road home the couple shared. Johnson, 45, was charged with first-degree murder. A family member reported Sylvester missing on July 8 after she had not been heard from since July 2. Any motive for the death is unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.

THIS IS A LOW

A neighbor of Saints Delight Church in Winston-Salem notified police of a break-in at the church on July 11 at about 3 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found 16-year-old Coby Lee Buchanan standing behind the altar looking out over a non-existent congregation. Police determined that Buchanan had also broken into a separate building on the property, Fellowship Hall. Once inside the Fellowship Hall, Buchanan had used at least one of the fire extinguishers, causing an excessive mess. Police found a backpack containing clothing and a crowbar inside the church, but claimed that nothing appeared to be stolen. Buchanan was charged with malicious injury to property, possession of burglary tools, resisting an officer and two counts of breaking into a place of worship. His bond was set at $15,000.

OUT OF TIME

Winston-Salem police responded to a report of a vehicle striking the Arts Based Elementary School on North Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The driver, Raymond Clanton, was stopped in the parking lot area when he suffered a medical emergency. He accelerated and drove his 2001 Ford Taurus through the children’s playground area, striking the building. Clanton, 58, was pronounced dead on the scene due to health-related issues. Neither speed nor alcohol was deemed a factor in the crash. There were no children on the playground at the time of the incident and no one was injured.
