Leading off Found Objects this week is an open invitation from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts to join the Open Dream Ensemble, a multi-disciplinary children’s theater group, for the premiere of two new original plays — Dream Machines: The Impossible Happens and Peril on the Red Planet to be performed at the Stevens Center, located at 405 W. 4th Street in Winston-Salem on Thursday. Both plays are free and open to the public. Dream Machines follows Orville, Wilbur and Katharine Wright as they pursue their dream of flying and connects to future developments in travel. Geared for children in grades K-5, show time is 6:30 p.m. Peril on the Red Planet, tells the story of a 13-year-old girl as she works to end famine on Mars. Geared for children in grades 3-8, show time is 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the Livestock Players will hold auditions for the Broadway smash hit Rent at the City Arts Studio Center, located at the Greensboro Cultural Center located at 200 N.Davie St., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Auditions are open to anyone ages 14-20.

Triad Stage at the Pyrle Theater presents the stage version of Picnic premiering Sunday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the theater venue located at 232 S. Elm St. in Greensboro. Ticket prices range from $10 to $42 for this Pulitzer Prize-winning drama set in a small Kansas town in the early 1950s.

The Color Purple, starring “American Idol” winner and High Point native Fantasia Barrino opens at the Greensboro Coliseum’s War Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. The show runs through Sept. 13 with 7:30 p.m. show times Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; 8 p.m. show times on Friday and Saturday; 7 p.m. show time on Sunday.
