I had the pleasure of seeing Gordon perform at the defunct Lynaugh's Music Emporium back in the mid-'90s. According to my recollection, he was aiming for a combination of the barrelhouse rock and roll of Jerry Lee Lewis and the punk fire of X and came out sounding a little like Bruce Springsteen.
My favorite nights to see live music are before the middle of the work week. Granted that has something to do with getting my assignments in early, but those shows also have a purity that the drunken crush of the Saturday-night social scene can overwhelm.
